Arctic Sea Ice Day is July 15th, and we’re counting down with key facts about Arctic sea ice from our chief climate scientist, Dr. Flavio Lehner. ❄️ Arctic Sea Ice Fact 5: Less sea ice means the extra heat is absorbed into the ocean, which means less heat is reflected away from the Earth, which equals disrupted climates. Just as a heart circulates blood and regulates the body’s temperature, the ocean controls the world’s climate system by circulating heat, moisture, and nutrients around the planet. A wildlife photographer—@gregpiperarts—actually left this on my post: “These bears do not exist for the enjoyment of visitors and would-be photographers. You people know nothing about conservation, you only care about what makes you feel good. Alaska’s fish and wildlife is the best in the world! They know what works for ‘real’ conservation, not ‘feel-good’ conservation. When there are too many animals and not enough resources, it is their job to control the population. Stop making a social media ‘crisis’ over everything you know nothing about! Go back to sleep please.” Yes—someone who photographs bears for a living is defending aerial gunning of wolves and bears as “real conservation.” What’s even more shocking? How many bear photographers and head guides in Alaska are completely silent on this. These are people who owe their careers to these animals—who market bear tours, sell prints, and build platforms off the backs of bears—and when it comes time to speak up, they disappear. Why do you think that is? Fear of losing permits? Ties to ADFG? Or is it just easier to stay silent and keep profiting while pretending to care? Farm road dance party with the best crew! 🕺🏽💃🏾🐗🎶 As promised, here’s an extended version of our spontaneous farm-style dance off. Joy filled the air as the kids broke into the most energetic, heartwarming farm-style dance off I’ve ever seen. Their rhythm was incredible. So natural, so full of life. Every move was spontaneous yet somehow perfectly in sync with the beats. Even Betsie the warthog couldn’t resist the vibes making a guest appearance. 🐗 The Amarok’s speakers were pumping out great tunes that brought everyone to life, filling the dusty road with rhythm, laughter, and celebration. Despite year-to-year variation, satellite data show that the rate of sea ice decline for September sea ice is 82,300 square kilometers (32,000 square miles) per year, or 12.8% per decade compared to the 1981 to 2010 average. That’s like losing an area the size of South Carolina or New Brunswick every year.
