“I wanted a room with a fireplace,” says photographer @anita_calero_arboleda . In New York, that’s a bit of a tall order—wood-burning fireplaces can only be maintained in homes built before 2015. When Calero closed on this studio apartment with the relative rarity in an Art Deco building last August, its interiors had been largely stripped of any historic detailing. Inspired by Calero’s love of Japan and a desire for a cozy yet elegant home, woodworkers Charlie Herrera and Fabian Sukmangal built the apartment’s new mahogany millwork, including a new desk with integrated cabinetry, mantel, kitchenette concealed behind accordion doors, and a chic, removable radiator cover.
