This World Ocean Day, as the UN Ocean Conference is about to begin, we have five years left to quadruple effective ocean protection and fill the gap to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 (30x30). Scientists and economists have documented the benefits of full marine protection, but the new film Ocean with David Attenborough tells their story more clearly than ever. At 99, the world’s greatest natural history storyteller shares his most powerful message: marine protection works. According to a new study by Dynamic Planet and @natgeopristineseas, the world needs to create 190,000 new small marine protected areas (ideally no-take areas) nearshore to get to 30% of the territorial seas alone. That would restore marine life, replenish small-scale fisheries, improve the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on a healthy ocean for their livelihoods, and foster climate resilience.
