The sanctuary of the Aldabra Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site and critical habitat for wildlife, is being sacrificed for a luxury resort. Despite public outcry and scientific warnings, the destruction has begun and land is being cleared on Assomption Island. Take action to protect it at the link in bio. This is not just about ONE island; this is part of a devastating pattern of land grabs. Time and time again, precious ecosystems and local communities are silenced for profit. Aldabra, home to giant tortoises and 400 species found nowhere else, is now facing the same threat. We cannot let history repeat itself. The Australian government has approved deforestation within the Jarrah Forest of Western Australia, clearing the way for the mining of bauxite, the main ingredient in aluminum. The mining company @south_32 is set to clear 9,600 acres of this old growth forest, which is home to threatened species like the Critically Endangered Woylie. This operation will destroy critical habitat for over 8,000 species, 80% of which are found nowhere else on Earth. While native forest logging was banned in Western Australia in 2024, clearance of native forests for mining is still allowed due to separate government policies that prioritize mining development over environmental protection. This new approval is in addition to South32’s previous deforestation, bringing the total area of Jarrah Forests cleared to over 38,000 acres. @rewild and @wild.ark stand to protect these towering ecosystems that are already at risk of climate collapse. Canadian oil and gas company ReconAfrica continues drilling for exploratory oil wells as they threaten the delicate balance of Namibia’s ecosystems and the livelihoods of its people. 🌳 “The Tree of Knowledge” is a new sculpture by the American artist Beeple (swipe to discover this contemporary medium). The artwork is generative, meaning that it unfolds in real-time, and shares contemporary news feeds, global temperatures, etc. The gleaming aluminum box depicts a hybrid tree that shape shifts and invites viewers to become participants. The artwork was displayed at museum @pinacotecaagnelli last month and is now installed near the New York Public Library. Beeple has generously donated proceeds from the sale of this artwork to support large-scale land conservation and food justice. Overall, the sculpture will support the creation of 11 new permanent protected areas globally. The locally led creation of new Amazonia Indigenous protected areas is one project supported by the artwork. “Titling Indigenous lands and designating new protected areas are crucial strategies to safeguard the vital Amazonia ecosystem,” said Christopher Jordan, Latin America Director for @rewild. Efforts of this collaboration are facilitated by Beeple Studios and #ArtintoAcres, an artist-run environmental initiative. Conservation partners for the Amazonia project include the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, the Foundation for Scientific and Technological Enterprises, and key Brazilian federal government agencies: the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, and the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples.
