Some 25 years into her career, @AnneHathaway knows how to be a star; two of her upcoming projects, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “The Princess Diaries 3,” see her reprising fiercely beloved roles, and she has been a glamorous ambassador for both Valentino and Versace. But what she was seeking in writer-director David Lowery’s “Mother Mary,” due later this year—a film that casts Hathaway as a sort of Gaga–Taylor Swift hybrid searching for her center and finding only darkness—was the chance to submit (her word) to the unknown. Preparing for the part wasn’t simply a matter of taking dance lessons (though there was plenty of that) or learning the music (crafted by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX). “I had to submit to being a beginner,” she explains. “Getting to that mindset—I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome.
