Now that a few days have passed, let me say this loud and clear: Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is the greatest performer of all time. I love music, but there is nothing — and I mean nothing — like seeing art performed live. Every single detail of Beyoncé’s show has meaning. Every moment is intentional. Every message is delivered with precision and purpose. She performed in Washington, DC on July 4th — and that wasn’t by accident. A lot of people still don’t fully understand why Beyoncé made a country album. Years ago, she released a country song and performed it at the CMA Awards. Despite breaking ratings records, she was treated horribly by the so-called “country community.” So what did she do? She did the work. She researched the roots of country music — and guess what she found? Black people created it. The banjo came from Africa. With COWBOY CARTER, Beyoncé didn’t ask for a seat at the table. She built her own damn table. And invited the world to sit with her. I hear people say, “I’m not a fan of Beyoncé” — and that’s fine. You don’t have to be a fan to recognize greatness. I’ve studied the greats: James Brown. Michael Jackson. Tina Turner. Prince. Legends. But with nearly three decades in the game, still climbing to new heights, Beyoncé has undeniably cemented her place as the greatest performer of all time. ACT II: COWBOY CARTER was necessary. Bold.
