In 2007, Apple released the first - generation smartphone. At the same time, the iteration of such mobile phones began. Before that, traditional mobile phones, which were like the Stone Age of mobile phones, were gradually phased out. As a result, a lot of mobile - phone waste was generated. During the period when China’s production supply chain was developing rapidly, I was thinking about how to deal with the mobile - phone hardware waste from the pre - Stone - Age era, those mobile phones that every family, including each of my friends, had and didn‘t know how to dispose of. So I collected them and created this series of works. In this series, I turned these mobile - phone cases into part of the headwear as decoration. Here, I’d like to mention the background of this period in China. During that time, there were very few, or even no, proper stylists in China. There were also not as many international fashion brands as there are now. China‘s domestic fashion brands were not as prosperous as they are today. So for many of my shoots, I chose not to wear clothes. Thus, this series of works with this theme came into being. Looking back now, these works seem a bit like AI - generated ones, but at that time, the head installations were completed entirely by hand. This was to pay tribute to that era and commemorate it. This series of works is called ”Bad Head“.📷#chenman
