🌫️ Little Shelter, designed by the Department of Architecture Co., is a hospitality project located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Completed in 2019, the project is a quiet yet memorable example of how contemporary architecture can respectfully reinterpret tradition. The building, located along the riverbank in the historic centre of the city, gently transforms the familiar regional style of Northern Thailand, which includes wooden buildings with pitched shingle roofs. Inspired by the traditional hip roof, its asymmetrical roof form is a continuation of the nearby treetop line. The west side of the roof has been cut out to create a deck, which provides a wide-angle view of the river at dusk. The building’s form and use of traditional materials, such as wood shingles laid in the traditional fish-scale pattern, which has preserved Northern Thai roofs’ water resistance for centuries, give it a sense of permanence. Little Shelter is particularly captivating as it quietly challenges that tradition. The river-facing façade is made entirely of polycarbonate shingles, which are cut to precisely match the size of the wood, giving it a translucent surface that captures and filters sunlight all day long, while the side walls and roof still have the warmth and texture of wood. By combining solid and translucent shingles in a decreasing gradient, the entrance facade occurs one step further. The shingle system keeps its visual integrity with the help of specially made transparent studs and screws.
