Oystra, the new mixed-use development in UAE by #ZHA for @official.richmind Located on Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, Oystra is a 128,000 sq. m seafront development of 950 one- to four-bedroom apartments, duplexes, penthouses, and waterfront villas, together with shopping, dining & leisure amenities.
Ras Al Khaimah is one of #UAE’s fastest-growing emirates with its population projected to grow 55% by 2030, requiring an additional 45,000 homes to meet future demand. #RasAlKhaimah’s tourism sector is also experiencing record growth. The emirate is anticipated to welcome 3.5 million tourists a year by 2030, increasing from 100,000 visitors in 2013.

Extending 4.5 km into the Arabian Sea with 23 km of coastline including 7.8 km of beaches, #AlMarjanIsland is being developed with parks, marinas, wellness centres & entertainment hubs.
Giving more than 75% of its apartments unobstructed views of the sea, the development’s fluid geometries encompass large balconies and terraces shaped to echo the rippled patterns carved by waves in sand. These balconies serve as extensions of each apartment’s living space while also shading the interiors from direct sunlight.

Oystra’s sculptural 20-storey waterfront towers are set within 42,000 sq. m of landscaped gardens, courtyards & beach club overlooking the bay, while the rooftop restaurant and 360° infinity pool give panoramic views of Al Marjan Island and the Arabian Sea.

The development connects with Al Marjan Island’s tree-lined coastal promenade, giving residents pedestrian access throughout the island via this sheltered shoreline walkway cooled by prevailing north-westerly winds blowing inland from the sea.

Environmental simulations maximised efficiencies in site conditions, structure, and orientation, while digital mapping analysis optimised the design’s external solar shading and enhanced natural ventilation. The development will integrate seawater-based cooling and an insulating cavity between the building envelope and the project’s façades that are exposed to direct sunlight.

Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum now open; exploring the power of science and the technological advancements defining our future. Adjacent to Shenzhen Metro’s Guangming Station, the design responds to its location as a solid, spherical volume facing the city and defining the southeast corner of the new Science Park. Extending into the park, the building’s volume stretches and transforms into a sequence of outdoor terraces. These terraces are functioning extensions of the interior galleries that surround the grand central atrium. With permanent & temporary exhibition halls, immersive theatres & cinemas, as well as research labs, educational facilities & innovation centre, the museum also includes visitor amenities, storage & workshops. The atrium’s multiple perspectives provide a thrilling launching point for every visitor’s journey of discovery. With its large, glazed wall facing the park, the atrium blurs the boundary between inside & out; inviting natural light & landscapes — as well as our boundless curiosity — into the heart of the building. Guided by passive environmental strategies, the design process employed computer simulations to test the building’s form, spaces and envelope for optimal performance within Shenzhen’s subtropical climate. The building’s orientation minimises solar heat gain. Mitigating direct exposure to the elements, stainless-steel panels create a ventilated cavity between the façade and the external walls. This system extends to the roof, which also incorporates photovoltaics. The 128,276 sq. m museum’s passive design elements combined with smart management networks operating high-efficiency systems are projected to reduce the building’s comprehensive energy consumption to 15.47 kgce/sqm per year, with a subsequent reduction in emissions achieved by lowering the museum’s operational electricity demand to an estimated 125.89 kWh/sqm a year. The museum’s procurement targeted 389,238.92 tonnes of recyclable materials, while grey-water recycling in addition to the collection and storage of rainwater will reduce overall water consumption to an estimated 14,906 cubic metres per year. The Masaryčka building in #Prague is one of three ZHA projects to win WAN Awards from @WorldArchitectureNews. Beautiful photo reposted from @polydikaya_svinka . . . Named Czech Republic’s “Building of the Year” 2024, #ZHA’s design of the Masaryčka building for @penta_real_estate integrates with Czech Railways’ reconstruction of the Masaryk Railway Station and establishes a dialogue with the urbanism of Prague’s Old Town, known as ‘the golden city of 100 spires’. . Defined by circulation routes giving access to new civic spaces and vital upgrade to an important transport hub, @masarycka_spojuje is located adjacent to the historic railway station on a derelict site that had stood abandoned for several decades. Transforming the existing car park on Havlíčkova Boulevard into new public square, creating a welcoming gateway to the city for suburban & domestic rail services and passengers using the planned airport rail link. External fins within Masaryčka’s façade transform the project’s horizontal composition along Na Florenci Street to the verticality of its western end facing the spires of the Old Town. . Achieving LEED Platinum certification and meeting RIBA 2025 targets for embodied & operational carbon, Masaryčka’s design incorporates roof gardens and a triple-insulated façade that ensures optimal natural light at all work stations. Photovoltaics harvest renewable energy while natural ventilation supported by smart management systems will reduce energy consumption. .

The King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station is one of three ZHA projects nominated for the AZ Awards 2025. Carrying more than 18 million passengers in its first weeks of operations, #RiyadhMetro is the world’s longest driverless transit system—spanning 176 kilometres across 6 lines and 85 stations throughout Saudi Arabia’s capital. The King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) Metro Station, designed by #ZahaHadidArchitects, serves as a key interchange on the new network, with six rail platforms over four levels connecting with bus and park-&-ride services to create an important multi-modal transport hub for the city. The KAFD Metro Station’s design prioritizes connectivity. Predicted rail, car and pedestrian traffic has been modelled, mapped and structured to optimize internal circulation and avoid congestion. The resulting configuration is a three-dimensional lattice defined by a sequence of opposing sinewaves (generated from the repetition and frequency variation of the station’s daily traffic flows), which act as the spine for the building’s circulation. These sinewaves extend to the station’s exterior clad in ultra-high-performance concrete panels. The façade’s geometric perforations reduce solar gain as a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional environmental sheltering within the region’s vernacular architecture. The composition of the station’s façade echoes the patterns generated by desert winds in sand, where multiple frequencies and reverberation generate the complex repetition of patterns evident in the natural world. Providing optimal comfort at minimum energy demand, the station combines effective passive design features with a high-efficiency cooling system that is powered by renewables and automatically adjusts to differing passenger levels throughout the day, while sliding door panels on each platform retain cool air within the station. The KAFD Metro Station has achieved LEED Gold certification by the US Green Building Council. Fantastic photos by @huftonandcrow

Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Centre is one of three ZHA projects announced as WAN Award winners. . Integrating 3 distinct cultural institutions for the city (a Performing Arts Centre with a 1200-seat Grand Theatre and a 500-seat multifunctional Black Box theatre; an interactive Science Centre; and an Art Museum) each venue incorporates unique characteristics, yet are share formal and structural logic. . The roof structure unites the different venues under a network of reticulated shells that envelop the 4 wings of the centre. Interconnecting bridges create a multi-layered public plaza at the heart of the centre with views to the interiors as well as to the surrounding promenades with their cafés & restaurants. . Echoing the chevron patterns and organic wing structures of the many species of migratory birds which fly in formation over southern #China, the latticed steel canopies sheltering each venue are supported by only 22 columns and span 270m x 170m and configured through repetition, symmetry and scale variation. This repetition optimised pre-fabrication, pre-assembly & modular construction. . The centre’s landscaping and surrounding lake are integral elements of #Zhuhai’s ‘sponge city’ initiative that targets the natural permeation, storage and re-use of at least 70% of the city’s rainwater using aquatic flora and fauna to naturally filter contaminants. Humidity and soil-moisture sensors within the landscaping’s irrigation system control and reduce water consumption. . Located within the subtropical climate of southern China, the double-insulated glazing of the building’s envelope is optimized for thermal performance and protected by the roof canopy which incorporates perforated aluminium panels for solar shading. The perforations within the panels vary in size to allow differing degrees of sunlight within the centre’s interior spaces in accordance to their programming requirements, orientation and solar gain. At night, this roof canopy bathes the centre in soft reflected light. . Opening photo @seilao_jiong; video Kevin Zhen .
