First look: ‘The Girlfriend‘ turns the clash between a mother and her son’s new flame into a juicy, gripping psychological thriller. Adapted from Michelle Frances’s bestselling 2018 novel of the same name, the upcoming six-part series follows #OliviaCooke’s Cherry, an alluring real estate agent with a mysterious past, and #RobinWright’s Laura, a successful art gallerist and protective mother. The two women butt heads as Cherry’s arrival in London—and relationship with Laura’s son, Daniel—sends both women spinning into a spiral of snooping and sabotage. “I’m hoping that [viewers] get hooked, and they’re like, I can’t wait to go to episode 2,” Wright says.
