Supreme/40 Acres. 04/24/2025 With a career spanning directing, producing, screenwriting and acting, Spike Lee is one of the most celebrated and prolific filmmakers working today. Born in Atlanta in 1957 and raised in Brooklyn, Lee made his directorial debut in 1986 with She’s Gotta Have It. Shot largely in black-and-white over the course of two weeks in Brooklyn, the film launched Lee as a vital and provocative voice in contemporary cinema. In the four decades since She’s Gotta Have It, Lee has written and directed over 30 films, including his enduring 1989 masterpiece Do The Right Thing, School Daze, Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, Clockers, Chi-Raq, and BlacKkKlansman, for which he won an Academy Award in 2019. Across such widely varied films, Lee has boldly explored a complex landscape of social and political issues shaping American life – chiefly through the lens of Black histories, relationships, communities and cultures. Perhaps more than any other filmmaker, Lee has captured the richness of Black experiences with unflinching narrative and visual style. In 1979, Lee and fellow filmmaker Monty Ross established a production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. 40 Acres has produced all of Lee’s documentary and feature films, as well as commercials and music videos – including his late-1980s Air Jordan ads and Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power” promo. Throughout the 1990s, 40 Acres expanded to include a record label and apparel production. During the summer of 1990, Lee opened Spike’s Joint in Fort Greene, Brooklyn; followed by Spike’s Joint West on Melrose Ave., and a kiosk at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles two years later. The outposts were hubs for 40 Acres apparel featuring and inspired by Lee’s films –including varsity jackets, sweaters, t-shirts and the ubiquitous X Cap, inspired by Lee’s monumental biopic of Malcolm X. Supreme has worked with Spike Lee on a 40 Acres collection featuring Lee’s films Malcolm X and Clockers. The collection consists of a Varsity Jacket, Baseball Jersey, two T-Shirts and a 6-Panel Hat. Available on April 24th. Available in Asia on April 26th.
