A week ago today, this strong dog was in surgery to remove his spleen and a mass. We now know it wasn’t cancer, and we’re so thankful. A few people have asked if I regret taking out his spleen now. I feel bad he had to go through that, but regret? Not a chance. Even though the mass wasn’t cancer, masses like that can rupture as they grow, and when they do, it can be fatal. So many dogs die from undetected internal masses that rupture without warning. We didn’t have a specific reason to take him in for an ultrasound…no symptoms, nothing obvious. We just wanted to be proactive with his health instead of waiting for something to go wrong. We totally understand that vet care is expensive and not everyone can afford to do that. But if you can be proactive, start now. Run bloodwork, ask about ultrasounds, talk to your vet, there are even mail-away cancer screening tests now. Do whatever you can, if you can. We finally did, and it might have saved Teddy’s life.

If you missed the big news…after Teddy’s spleen was removed due to a mass, the incredible teams at @torigenpets ran full pathology on the mass and surrounding tissue… and confirmed there’s NO CANCER! Huge thanks to @sojournvet for the initial ultrasound and to Dr. Aldridge for catching the mass in the first place. What’s wild is there were no symptoms, this was only caught because we decided to go above and beyond with a routine health screening. If you’re able, things like ultrasounds, bloodwork, and early cancer detection tests can literally save your dog’s life. Too often we wait until something is obviously wrong, but catching issues early can make all the difference. Now we focus on getting Teddy healed up so we can get back to the chaos, pranks, and joy we love sharing with you all.

Teddy is officially CANCER FREE. If you’ve been following along with Teddy’s journey, you know we recently made the tough decision to remove his spleen after discovering a mass. We could have waited and monitored it, but instead we chose to take immediate action and remove it so we could get a clear answer and not risk something dangerous spreading or rupturing. After talking to so many vets we lost count, this was the best thing we could do for Teddy as the mass (even if not cancerous) could rupture. Today we got the pathology results back from @torigenpets and the mass was benign. NO CANCER. No treatment needed. We are officially in the clear. Teddy still has about a week left of recovery from his splenectomy, but after that, life will go back to normal and we can all finally exhale a little. Thank you so much for all the support, love, thoughts, and prayers you’ve sent our way. We hope Teddy’s story can be a reminder of how important proactive dog care is. We want to specially thank Dr Aldridge with @sojournvet as he was the one that initially performed the ultrasound and found this mass. Also In the coming weeks we’ll be teaming up with Torigen to help educate more pet parents on what to do when faced with situations like this. A huge thank you to the entire team at @fetch_greenville as well, for the incredible job they did with Teddy’s surgery and aftercare.

Day 3 of dog pen life with Teddy after his spleen surgery lol. He’s doing really well, maybe a little too well. The hardest part now is keeping him calm. He’s already trying to play, jump on the couch, and plot his next prank like nothing ever happened. Over the next few days we’ll slowly give him more freedom, but for now we’re doing our best to keep him chill so he can heal properly. We’ve been watching movies, ordering too much @doordash , and planning things to come!

Teddy had a really good night. Hard to believe it’s just day 3 after major surgery, he’s already starting to act like his old self. I probably woke him up more than necessary just to check on him but I’d rather be overly cautious than miss something. He’s doing great. At one point I quietly opened the fridge for a drink (he was sound asleep in his recovery spot). I turned around and he was wide awake, staring me down like a hawk just making sure I wasn’t sneaking cheese without him.
