For more than 40 years, Jorge—a 60-year-old, 220-pound (99.7 kg) loggerhead sea turtle—lived in a shallow aquarium tank in Mendoza, Argentina, hundreds of miles from the sea. Once a rescue found tangled in a fishing net, then a local icon, he’s now undertaking a journey scientists once thought impossible—relearning how to live as a wild sea turtle. Being released after 40 years of captivity is tragic. It is uncertain if it will find its way home. This turtle should have gone to a sanctuary instead.
