Midday light, it happens to all landscape photographers! It’s hard to use the strong midday light for anything, but here is a collection where I photographed outside the golden hour with predominantly blue skies. A few suggestions on what to do with such weather. Avoid including the sky and utilise backlighting when photographing foliage in mountainous areas, use a polarising filter to darken the skies, convert to black and white, avoid the harshest midday light and shoot closer to the golden hour, use reflected light in canyons, benefit from colours in the landscape that works well with blue, take a break ;) I have an entire chapter about midday light and one about colour theory in my ebook about light in landscape photography. Check it out if you want to learn more about light and struggle with certain types of light. With minimal text, tons of examples and extended EXIF data it’s super easy to read and gets to the point fast. There’s a link in my bio. Happy learning 🤓

For Nat Geo photographer @jodymacdonaldphoto, the outdoors is completely intertwined with her life. It’s a place to return to and reconnect with nature, like she did on her recent adventure in Oregon. “I’ve spent most of my life chasing wild, remote places. The wilderness isn’t just an escape; it’s a return to something essential. In one week, I found sanctuary in the silence of a glassy lake, a proving ground on the basalt walls of Smith Rock, and a playground for mountain biking through pine-lined trails. The wild has shaped how I see, how I work, and how I am in the world. It reminds me that discomfort is a teacher and that beauty is everywhere if you’re paying attention.” | @ToyotaUSA #4Runner is your window to the wild #ToyotaPartner

The number of adults in the U.S. who will develop dementia is predicted to double by 2060—but eating well can help protect your memories. The aptly-named MIND diet has been shown to improve your brain function and slow cognitive decline. For nearly five decades, Edward Burtynsky has captured the impacts of human industry on Earth—mines, factories, cities—rendering vast landscapes of transformation in haunting detail. His otherworldly landscapes have the twin effect of disorienting the viewer while emphasizing our intimate connections to corners of the globe that usually remain out of sight—whether that's a ribbon of water near a nickel mine in Ontario glowing orange or an aerial shot of the border between an Arizona suburb and a neighboring Native American reservation.
