You Should Have Gone For The Head

Not sure what this guy was thinking, but let's be honest: this attempt looked doomed from the start. I’m not even sure placing his teeth in the proper place (around the windpipe) on this buffalo would have got the job done before that pissed off wall of hooves and horns made its way over to ruin his lunch.
I can’t say for sure whether or not this applies to this particular lion, but it looks to me like this guy is on his own, which is not an uncommon thing when it comes to male lions. Unlike female lions, the males are ousted from their birth prides at around the age of two, forcing them to fend for themselves as nomads. This period is perilous, as they must hunt alone or in small groups of other ousted males while avoiding stronger rivals and scavenging enough to survive.
If they are in fact alone, the nomadic stage is extremely hard on them. A solitary male must be exceptionally strong and ultra resourceful to endure the challenges of having to face the world alone without any backup. One way to end their solitary lifestyle is to take over a pride, but In order to do that, they must challenge and defeat the male that controls it. Sometimes more than one male controls a pride, so the single challenger will have to fight two or even three male lions and defeat them all to complete the takeover.
The nomadic stage is a lot easier for the males that get the boot from their birth prides as a group, consisting of either brothers or cousins. These lads are already bonded, so they can watch out for each other, work as a team to take down prey, stand guard over fallen prey so it doesn't get stolen. That said, even as a group, the nomad stage is still extremely difficult, and there are a lot of males who never exit the nomadic stage without dying first
Male lions definitely get shafted early in life, but it's seen as nature’s way of weeding out the weak. All the lions that make it out of this merciless gauntlet of solitude are bona fide alphas, and that's the whole point.
True glory is forged in the furnace of adversity
