Eating disorders are quietly increasing among women in midlife and beyond. Experts attribute the silent surge to hormonal shifts caused by menopause, as well as societal pressures and ideas disseminated on social media such as #SkinnyTok. And because these women don’t fit the stereotype of a person with an eating disorder—namely, they’re not teenage girls—they often experience missed diagnoses or delayed care. Yes because they keep being told they need to eat less to lose weight but no matter how low they go, nothing changes. I’m a PT, athlete and nutritionist. I’m struggling with the same issue. I’ve increased and decreased calories, I have increased and decreased physical activity. It all comes down to hormonal imbalance. Im going on HRT soon to help with my million symptoms I deal with. I’ve done everything naturally most of my life and unfortunately I have ran out of options.

An eating disorder isn’t just something that “happens” to someone—it’s a complex, deeply rooted struggle often tied to trauma, control, perfectionism, or the need to numb emotional pain. It’s not about vanity or willpower, and it’s rarely just about food.

We grew up in diet culture, that mindset doesn’t go away. And now we’re gaining weight when we look at food. It’s not a great combination, I can attest.

If you are in menopause one of the main sources of estrogen is stored in fat cells. It’s better to have a *little* on you than be rail thin.
