They're not fireflies, and they're not worms—yet they glow electric blue from both ends. Orfelia fultoni, the larval form of the fungus gnat, is found only in Appalachia and lights up forest floors in late spring with a bioluminescence scientists are still trying to understand. Elusive and easy to miss, these insects have only recently been correctly identified in several parts of Appalachia. Learn more about this ongoing discovery at the link in bio. Finally, someone of note actually talking about these cool little guys! I found the easiest place to see them is in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park up by Neels Gap. You only need to walk a little into the trail at night and turn your lights off, and then look at any embankment with moss and you can see them! Give your eyes time to adjust or use a red light to preserve your night vision. If you’re not careful you’ll walk right by them and not even know! There’s also blue ghost fireflies (not normal fireflies) too during certain times of the year!

Looks similar to the glowworms of Te Anau, New Zealand. Arachnocampa luminosa to be exact.
