Known locally as hargila, the threatened Greater Adjutant stork has found a champion in an unlikely place: the Hargila Army, a group of about 20,000 rural women in India turned conservationists. Since 2014, the women have worked tirelessly to give the storks a desperately needed reputational revamp. Once reviled as filthy, adjutants prey on fish, frogs, snakes, rats, and smaller birds like ducks, rummaging through landfills looking for carcasses (hargila translates to bone swallower). Wildlife biologist Dr. Purnima Devi Barman saw the Greater Adjutant differently. She says she fell “deeply in love” with the birds and, under her guidance and with the help of the Hargila Army, the adjutant’s numbers have quadrupled in Assam to more than 1,800 birds. Pictured above, members of the Hargila Army in Dadara Village, Assam, India, throw a baby shower for Greater Adjutant stork chicks in December 2024. Dok dandi.rahman14/vt #pendaki #pendakigunung#pendakiindonesia #petualangan #tanjakancinta

“Drenched & Determined” is live - a special episode featuring a behind-the-scenes look from a unique, upcoming film/art project with @chrisbenchetler I was shooting stills for recently. Technically speaking - this was one of the harder shoots I’ve ever been involved with & it was amazing to see such an impressive crew pull off really difficult shots in such tricky conditions. This is one of those special projects to be a part of & I’m always inspired by experts in the industry coming together to make something beautiful… especially alongside an old friend @snackfarmer with an epic assist & DIT. Believe it or not, interactions between gulls and pigeons are some of the more common submissions we get over here. It makes sense, both gulls and pigeons are commonly found in urban areas, and everyone carries a camera around with them 24/7. Not all of these clips are worth posting, but there’s something about this one that compelled me to upload it. After watching it a few times, I started wondering if pigeons were a staple of the gull’s diet or something more recently added to it. It's definitely the latter, but when did they figure out that these wobbly newspaper colored birds could be taken as lunch? Then I started wondering why there’s pigeons in every city, then I took a nap, came back and found this on a forum for pigeon enthusiasts: Published: 2004-07-19 17:00 PDT “I posted a thread, quite a while ago, about how I witnessed a seagull devouring a pigeon, here, in Queens, New York. Both I and some of our friends assumed that the pigeon must have been dead before that happened, finding it hard to believe that gulls attack and kill pigeons... Well, a couple of days ago I witnessed an entire scene of an attack and killing of a pigeon by a seagull. A group of pigeons were laying in the sun on the roof of a store nearby and suddenly a seagull came down, like a hawk on top of one of them. It took him a whole minute to kill him with strokes of his powerful beak, while the poor birdie was desperately trying to save himself from the predator. It is very sad to see the gulls, these elegant and beautiful bigger birds, prey on the pigeons, whom we all love. It is very frustrating and disgusting, especially to see this happening in a neighborhood where people show more and more compassion for all birds, pigeons and gulls included.” This is the earliest mention of this bloodthirsty behavior that I could find on the internet, but gulls have been common in urban areas since the 80s so I’m gonna need some of you OGs to crack an Encyclopedia Britannica and help me out here. 📽 by @phill.stagram Nature Is Metal is powered by you!
