For years, the U.S. government has warned travelers they will soon need a Real ID to board domestic flights, only to keep postponing the deadline. But “soon” appears to be real this time. As of May 7, passengers will need to present a Real ID or another approved form of identification like a passport. A standard driver’s license or state ID will no longer pass at airport security checkpoints, the Department of Homeland Security says. We explain what to know, including how to apply for a Real ID, at the link in our bio. Photo by @dustchambers

Passport because I’m too lazy to deal with this

A drivers license isn’t a real ID?

Cue the “I don’t know what Real ID is” and I haven’t been paying attention for 20 years comments.

So what’s a real ID if not a starred driver’s license?

The real ID was a post 9/11 scare tactic. It is a tedious exercise to get a nice little star on your ID. What a colossal waste of time and resources, only here to inconvenience every American traveling.

This should not be forced on US citizens. Currently under 50% of US citizens have passports meaning they are unable to leave their country. Currently 60-70% European, Canadian and Australian citizens have passports.

Passport because I'm too smart to deal with all this. My driver's license will renew automatically as a real ID in 2 years.

Real ID is an enhanced drivers license. Get it next time you have to renew your DL
