Not Log For This World 📽 by @lifeon_marz_ After standing for approximately 300 years, this ancient tree finally let go A bolt of lightning generates between 10 million and 1 billion volts, unleashing a powerful electrical surge that can devastate a tree. This immense energy rapidly heats and vaporizes internal moisture, producing steam that may cause the tree to split, explode, or in this case just give up completely. Older trees, with decayed heartwood or fragile structures, are particularly susceptible to such catastrophic damage. The electrical current may also flow through roots or wet ground, creating an electrocution hazard for anyone nearby. Sometimes, in addition to a potential collapse, the strike can spark a fire, further endangering the surroundings. Eye of the storm 👁️🌀 NGC 5643 is a grand design spiral galaxy, which refers to its two large, symmetrical spiral arms. The galaxy’s arms are home to young bright blue stars, as well as star-forming regions in pink and dust clouds that lace throughout in a dark reddish-brown. Forty million light-years away in the constellation Lupus, NGC 5643 hosts a galactic nucleus that shines bright. This core is powered by a supermassive black hole, which traps gas in a spinning disk that heats to hundreds of thousands of degrees. This releases wavelengths of light across the electromagnetic spectrum, but especially in X-ray wavelengths. This small island is part of Vestmannaeyjar, an archipelago of 15 to 18 islands. Today, the island is deserted, but it was once inhabited by five families. The last of these families left in the 1930s and the island has been uninhabited since then.
