Video by @joelsartore | Known in Hawaiian culture as “jewels of the forest,” snails, such as this critically endangered O'ahu ground snail once filled the forests of Hawaii. Without action to protect these and other snail species, experts say that around 100 Hawaiian snail species could be extinct within the decade. #PhotoArk
For decades, the Congo Basin—home to the world’s second largest rainforest—was largely invisible to climate science. Spanning about 500 million acres across Central Africa, this vital ecosystem had been left understudied, despite its immense potential to affect the global climate. But a new generation of scientists in Central Africa is changing that, leading the charge in exploring and protecting the rainforest. At a time when the health of our environment is more critical than ever, these scientists are reshaping our understanding of how to safeguard the Earth’s future. Unravel the mysteries of the Congo at the link in bio. Zoologist and photographer Sherif Abdallah made this image of a red palm weevil using a microscope lens. He focused on different parts of the insect and made dozens of separate photographs. Combined, the shots create one sharp, clear picture. “Beneath its destructive reputation, the red palm weevil reveals a mesmerizing complexity—each groove, curve, and texture of its exoskeleton tells a story of adaptation, survival, and destruction,” says Abdallah.
