LAST CHANCE to explore Spectacle, the Magnum Square Print Sale 📣
Inge Morath’s coverage of the 1954 Festival of San Fermín in Pamplona, Spain captures the vibrant and intense atmosphere of a week-long, centuries-old practice.
In her image chosen for Spectacle, a couple pose on a wooden horse at a photographer’s studio, a tranquil moment far from the frenzy. Morath's visual study of the festival bears witness not only to the chaotic "encierro" (“running of the bulls”) and the solemn rituals of matadors, but also the daily life on Pamplona's streets.
"I loved the people, they let me photograph them, but also they wanted me to listen to them, to tell me what they knew, so that we told their story together,” Morath recalled.
