Head To Head Combat 📽 by @inthesemountains Each year, bighorn rams transform mating season into a relentless showdown, charging with bolt-loosening force to slam heads in a perpetual battle for dominance. What would be skull-shattering chaos for most animals showcases their unique ability to not only dish out a beating, but to absorb the equivalent of a low speed (35mph) head-on collision. Their skulls are honed to soak up whatever may come, and during pleasin season, if they want a change to pass on their genes, the fight is surely on its way. The configuration of their horns, coupled with a uniquely robust skull structure, works like a built-in shock absorber, allowing them to engage in these violent rituals without completely obliterating their craniums. Additionally, powerful neck muscles work to stabilize their heads during impact, reducing the risk of injuries like whiplash. Inside the skull, the brain is situated to withstand the rigors of their combative lifestyle. Its position and the natural cushioning provided by the skull serve to limit movement during impact, minimizing the likelihood of concussions. A celestial "lightsaber" ✨ This image from Hubble's 26th year shows a glimpse into a turbulent starbirth region known as the Orion B molecular cloud complex, located about 1,350 light-years away. Partially obscured by a dark, Jedi-like cloak of dust, a newborn star shoots twin jets out into space as a sort of birth announcement to the universe.
