It's quite literally reproduce or bust out there, it's a chance to live forever in the blood of their next of kin. Their blood carries instructions on how to evade predators, survive disease, best your opponent and hear the lamentations of their women. Sure, these two didn't make it this time, but who’s to say they weren't successful in prior years. They both may have already sired a few young and were looking for more when they met each other. Neither one knew they would be the ones to end up taking one another off the chessboard, but that's how it turned out. If we could somehow ask them if it was all worth it, I’ll bet I already know the answer Note: very few rutting battles end this way, where both animals die (1-2%), but it obviously does happen from time to time.
