City of stars 🌟
Messier 100 is a "grand design" spiral galaxy, meaning that its arms are clearly defined and prominent, extending outward from the galactic core. These arms are also home to several small black holes!
Hubble released this image in its 29th year, giving a detailed view despite M100's location 56 million light-years away.
We're sharing one outstanding image from each year of Hubble’s mission to celebrate its upcoming 35th birthday – counting down to a new series of anniversary images! Stay tuned for more, and get caught up at the link in our bio.
Image description: A massive spiral galaxy fills the image, with its bright yellow core seen near the upper left. Spiral arms whirl outward, laced through with dark brown dust and bright blue patches of star formation.
