Via @thesarahmeister: Seventy-four years ago this jolly group of photographers – including Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, and Nancy and Beaumont Newhall – gathered in Aspen to address such critical questions as “The nature of photographic truth,” “Can photographs help achieve social progress?” and “Who makes the picture, photographer or subject?” One of the most tangible outcomes of this conference was Aperture, which was established as a quarterly magazine in 1952 with Minor White (another Aspen participant) as its founding editor. Earlier this month Alex Hedison, Michael Famighetti and I had the pleasure of leading a roundtable conversation about this conference at the Aspen Ideas Festival, enlivened by the participation of Tyler Mitchell, Sarah Lewis, and many others. On the walls around us were photographs made by the 1951 participants, including Ansel Adams’ Maroon Bells. One of Dorothea Lange’s photographs made at the conference graced the first cover of Aperture magazine. Bob Bishop made the first image here of the 1951 participants in the lobby of the Hotel Jerome, and many others you can find on Rupert Jenkins’ Colorado Photo History Blog. #aspenideas #photography #aspen @sarahelizabethlewis1 @tylersphotos @alexhedisonstudio @michaelfamighetti @aspenideas @aperturefnd @hoteljeromeauberge @coloradophotohistory
