In 2007, @rafal.milach traveled across his native Poland to photograph portraits of retired Polish circus performers reinhabiting their former, whimsical personas. The circus, or “Cyrk Polski,” became a cultural phenomenon during the post-war era, entertaining crowds for decades until the 1990s, when it dwindled following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. In his series, Milach depicts the performers – former magicians, acrobats, and contortionists – donning their old costumes in the solitude of their homes. He also captured the derelict arena of the prestigious State Circus School based in Julinek. Having closed its doors in 1999, the school was reinstated in 2014 following a movement to revive its cultural heritage, and now hosts the largest circus arts exhibition in Poland. The first image in this post will be featured in the upcoming Square Print Sale, Spectacle, for one week only starting April 21. 🔗 Read more about the series at the @magnumphotos link in bio. PHOTOS (left to right): (1) Zdzislaw, 63, worked for 46 years as a magician and acrobat. Today marks 27 years since the completion of the Good Friday Agreement, signed to help bring an end to the decades-long conflict in Northern Ireland known as The Troubles. Magnum photographers documented events that unfolded in Northern Ireland during the conflict, depicting scenes of protest and destruction on the streets, as well as violent clashes between soldiers of the British Army, the Irish Republican Army, and civilians. "As a photographer, when you cover a civil war or a war, it’s not just about the battle and the violence: wars are very complex phenomenons which have aspects that are social, economical, psychological and in this case, religious, as well,” @abbas.photos said of his time covering the events. "So you have to put what you’re seeing — events unfolding — into perspective." 🔗 Read about the conflict from the perspectives of four photographers in the @magnumphotos bio. Flamingos mid-flight. Volcanoes mid-eruption. Nature hits different with photographer @melzagers 🦩 #MadeWithLightroom "The process starts with photographing the image itself. In landscape photography, I love two things: crazy beautiful landscapes, or I like to keep it minimalistic, so I try to minimize the amount of distractions in a photo. Lightroom gives me the option to play with radial masks to shape light more. In a lot of my photos, you can see a darker foreground and a lighter sky or even blown out sometimes. My most used slider is the clarity slider because it gives me that dreamy look I go for in my photos."
