Highlights from Lucien Clergue’s personal collection of photographs will be offered by Parisian auction house Ader @aderparis_ on April 10. We’re excited and honored to see Ansel’s portrait gracing the front cover of the catalogue—a warm tribute to their friendship.

From the introduction to the auction catalogue:
“Lucien Clergue, the first photographer to join the Académie des Beaux-Arts, founder of the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d’Arles, and the driving force behind the creation of the École nationale supérieure de la photographie and the photographic collections of the Musée Réattu, placed Arles, his hometown, the city where he grew up, at the center of the universe of those who shared this love for the art of writing with light. This goes to show that Lucien Clergue has today become a leading figure in photography in France, the country where the medium was invented, but also throughout the world. Lucien Clergue is not just an institution in and of himself. All those who had the chance to meet him—and there were many, given the approachable and hyperactive defense of his art—will continue to attest to the warmth he shared when it came to communicating his passions for the visual arts… He brought to his ancient city the greatest figures of the photographic scene of his time, from France and elsewhere. Jacques Henri Lartigue, Brassaï, Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Willy Ronis, Édouard Boubat, and his friends Jean Dieuzaide, Denis Brihat, and Jean-Claude Sudre on one side of the river. Ansel Adams, Robert Mapplethorpe, André Kertész, Ralph Gibson, Mary Ellen Mark, Peter Beard, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Aaron Siskind, Jerry Uelsmann, and Judy Dater on the other. Eikoh Hosoe, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, and Kishin Shinoyama from their distant East. This entire world joyfully gathered around Lucien to celebrate photography for an Arlesian summer. . .”
