Photos by #CanonPhotographer @gunnargunnar: "The Stokksnes beach in Southeast Iceland is a place of unparalleled photographic diversity. Whether you’re here for golden hour, the northern lights, or simply to feel the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the black sands, this location never disappoints. Overlooking it all is the dramatic Vestrahorn mountain — a jagged, cinematic peak that adds an unmistakable backdrop to every shot.
The black sand here is perfect for capturing stunning reflections. Shallow tidal pools often form across the beach, creating natural mirrors that amplify the drama of the landscape. All you need are calm wind conditions (which, admittedly, can be rare in notoriously windy Iceland) and a low shooting angle. The key is to get your camera as close to the surface as possible — that’s when the mirror effect really kicks in, turning the scene into something surreal.
I usually place my hand beneath the camera to feel the surface of the water before risking any submersion. It really helps, especially when used together with the flip-out screen."
