In Islamic culture, cats are regarded as pure and receive special treatment, with many stories recounting the Prophet Muhammad God's blessing and peace be upon him compassion for cats. This religious legacy, along with a cultural tradition that values kindness to animals, encourages Turks to make efforts to care for cats by providing food and shelter. In Istanbul, there are numerous initiatives dedicated to caring for cats, with food and water boxes placed in public areas. Some shops and cafes even open their doors to cats and consider them regular guests. Additionally, many Turks contribute to the health care of stray cats, funding vaccinations and necessary treatments. This is nonsense! Cats are treated horrifically in Turkey. There was a case recently of a man kicking a cat to death but he only received a caution from the courts, and there are many other cases of cruelty just like that. You only need to visit the websites and instagram accounts of cat shelters and rescue centres to see just how badly they’re abused. Wake up from the propaganda!

However, the ruling party and its ally signed a new law to catch stray animals - especially dogs - and keep them at shelters ( not many and the existing ones in poor condition). Moreover if not adopted during that period, they will be killed. So, let's not romanticise the situation.
