Every year, millions of herring spawn around the islands near Vancouver. The spawning herring attract predators such as sea lions, eagles, gulls and orcas. It turns into a feeding frenzy as the fish play a crucial role in the ecosystem. During this spectacular natural event, I heard stories from locals who have been observing it for years. The herring spawn is in danger of collapsing as overfishing has been threatening their numbers year after year. This is also sadly one of the last places along the BC coast where commercial fishing still happens. I’ve photographed the spawn twice now. A few years ago from an underwater perspective, and this year from @johnkelseyphoto’s sailboat with @taylormichaelburk.

Bombastic 👀 captured in the wild by @alexpantela #MadeWithLightroom "When it comes to editing a photo, my primary focus is guiding the viewer’s attention. I begin by deciding where I want the eye to rest, then build everything around that focal point. I enhance the details of the subject while maintaining a softer, more subdued atmosphere in the surrounding areas so as not to overpower the point of focus. One of the most effective techniques I use is masking in Lightroom. In this case, I applied a radial gradient to the eye - lifting exposure, shadows, and contrast to draw out its depth - then use linear gradients to gently darken or brighten certain parts around the image. This helps reduce visual distractions and subtly guide the light to flow in a way that feels both natural and visually engaging."
